What is Boric Acid?

Boric Acid (H₃BO₃), also known as Orthoboric Acid or Hydrogen Borate, is a weak monobasic Lewis acid of boron. It is a white, odourless, crystalline solid that is soluble in water and commonly available as a fine powder or granules. Boric Acid is one of the most widely used boron compounds industrially and has applications spanning glass manufacturing, ceramics, agriculture, wood preservation, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

Polychem Industries supplies Boric Acid in industrial and technical grades to glass manufacturers, ceramic producers, agriculture companies, wood treatment companies, and cosmetic formulators across India and internationally. It is closely related to Borax — Boric Acid can be produced from Borax by acidification — and the two products serve complementary industrial roles.

Applications & Uses

🪟

Glass & Fibreglass

A major raw material in borosilicate glass (Pyrex), laboratory glass, optical glass, and fibreglass production. Improves thermal shock resistance, reduces thermal expansion, and lowers the melting temperature of glass.

🏺

Ceramics & Glazes

Used as a flux in ceramic frits, glazes, and enamels. Lowers the firing temperature, improves gloss and surface quality, and increases the chemical resistance of finished ceramic products.

🪵

Wood Preservation

Applied to timber as a preservative against wood-boring insects, fungal decay, and dry rot. Also used as a fire retardant treatment for cellulosic building materials and insulation.

💆

Cosmetics & Personal Care

Used as a pH buffer and preservative in cosmetic formulations including eye drops, contact lens solutions, skin creams, and antiseptic preparations. Has mild antiseptic properties.

🌾

Agriculture

Applied as a micronutrient boron fertiliser for crops that are boron-deficient. Boron is essential for plant reproduction, cell wall integrity, and carbohydrate metabolism.

🔥

Fire Retardant Formulations

Used in fire retardant coatings, treatments, and composites for wood, textiles, and paper. Often used in combination with borax for improved fire protection performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Boric Acid and Borax?
Boric Acid (H₃BO₃) is a weak acid with a pH of about 5.1 in solution, while Borax (Na₂B₄O₇) is an alkaline salt with a pH of about 9.5 in solution. Boric Acid has a higher boron content by weight (B₂O₃: 56.3%) compared to Borax Decahydrate (36.5%). Both are widely used boron compounds but are chosen based on whether an acidic or alkaline boron source is required for the specific application.
Is Boric Acid used in eye drops and contact lens solutions?
Yes — Technical/Pharmaceutical Grade Boric Acid is used in eye drop formulations and contact lens solutions as a pH buffer and mild antiseptic. It helps maintain the pH of the solution close to that of natural tears. This application requires a higher grade than standard industrial boric acid, with strict limits on heavy metals and impurities.
Can Boric Acid be used as a wood preservative?
Yes — Boric Acid, often used in combination with Borax, is an effective wood preservative against fungi, wood-boring beetles, and termites. It is applied by pressure treatment, diffusion, or surface application. It is considered more environmentally friendly than many alternative wood preservatives.
Do you export Boric Acid outside India?
Yes. We export to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Africa with full export documentation. Contact us for export pricing and lead times.
