What is Di Propylene Glycol?

Di Propylene Glycol (DPG) is a mixture of three isomeric chemical compounds: 4-oxa-2,6-heptanediol, 2-(2-hydroxypropoxy)-1-propanol, and 2-(2-hydroxypropoxy)-2-propanol. It is produced as a co-product during the manufacture of Propylene Glycol (PG) from propylene oxide. DPG is a colourless, odourless, viscous liquid with a higher molecular weight (~134 g/mol), higher boiling point, and lower vapour pressure compared to Propylene Glycol.

Polychem Industries supplies Di Propylene Glycol in Industrial Grade and Fragrance Grade to cosmetic formulators, fragrance manufacturers, personal care companies, and industrial chemical users across India and internationally. DPG's most notable application is as a fragrance carrier and diluent — its low vapour pressure, excellent solubility for fragrance materials, and mild odour make it the preferred carrier in perfumery and personal care.

Applications & Uses

🌸

Fragrance & Perfumery

The primary application for Fragrance Grade DPG. Used as a carrier and diluent for fragrance oils, essential oils, and aroma chemicals in perfumes, home fragrances, and air fresheners. Its extremely low odour ensures it does not interfere with the fragrance profile.

💆

Cosmetics & Personal Care

Used in lotions, creams, body sprays, and personal care products as a solvent, humectant, and fragrance carrier. Its mild skin feel, low irritation potential, and good spreadability make it ideal for cosmetic formulations.

🕯️

Candles & Home Fragrance

Widely used in scented candles, reed diffusers, and home fragrance products as a fragrance carrier. Its low vapour pressure provides a controlled, sustained release of fragrance rather than a rapid initial burst.

🎨

Plasticisers & Resins

Industrial Grade DPG is used as a plasticiser in resins, as a reactive intermediate in polyurethane and polyester production, and as a component in specialty coating formulations.

⚙️

Hydraulic Fluids

Used as a component in water-based hydraulic fluids and industrial lubricants. Its high boiling point, low volatility, and water solubility make it suitable for industrial fluid applications.

🧪

Chemical Intermediate

Used as a raw material in the production of specialty polyols, alkyd resins, and other chemical intermediates in the chemical manufacturing industry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is DPG preferred over Propylene Glycol as a fragrance carrier?
Di Propylene Glycol is preferred as a fragrance carrier because it has a much lower vapour pressure than Propylene Glycol, meaning it evaporates more slowly and provides a more sustained, controlled fragrance release. It also has a very mild, practically odourless character that doesn't interfere with the fragrance composition. Its excellent solubility for fragrance materials and skin-friendly properties make it the standard diluent in professional perfumery.
What is the difference between Fragrance Grade and Industrial Grade DPG?
Fragrance Grade DPG has a higher purity (99.5%+), ultra-low colour, and practically no odour — essential requirements for use in perfumes and cosmetics where even trace impurities can affect the fragrance profile or skin compatibility. Industrial Grade has slightly lower purity specifications and is suitable for plasticisers, resins, and industrial fluid applications where the high purity of fragrance grade is not required.
Is DPG safe for use in cosmetics and on skin?
Yes — Di Propylene Glycol is widely used in cosmetics and personal care products and is considered safe for skin contact at normal use levels. It has good skin tolerance and low irritation potential. It is approved for use in cosmetics by major regulatory bodies worldwide including the EU Cosmetics Directive.
Do you export Di Propylene Glycol outside India?
