EDTA Disodium

Industrial & Cosmetic Grade Chelating Agent — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is EDTA Disodium?

EDTA Disodium (Disodium Ethylenediaminetetraacetate) is the disodium salt of EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid), a powerful chelating agent capable of binding and sequestering metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and copper. It is a white crystalline powder that, due to having two of its four carboxylic acid groups already neutralised as sodium salts, has a lower pH and different solubility profile compared to the tetrasodium form, making it suited to specific applications requiring this particular degree of neutralisation.

Polychem Industries supplies EDTA Disodium to cosmetic formulators, cleaning product manufacturers, water treatment companies, and textile processors across India and internationally. Its chelating capability helps stabilise formulations against trace metal contamination, prevent metal-catalysed degradation, and improve the performance of various industrial and consumer products.

Applications & Uses

🧴

Cosmetics & Personal Care

Widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations as a chelating agent to bind trace metal ions that could otherwise catalyse oxidative degradation of the formulation, helping preserve product stability, colour, and fragrance over the product shelf life.

🧹

Cleaning Products & Detergents

Used in liquid detergents and cleaning formulations to sequester calcium and magnesium hardness ions, improving surfactant efficiency and preventing scale deposition on cleaned surfaces.

💧

Water Treatment

Used in industrial water treatment applications to chelate metal ions and prevent scale formation and metal-catalysed corrosion in water systems, boilers, and cooling towers.

🧵

Textile Processing

Used in textile dyeing and finishing processes to chelate metal ions present in process water or raw materials that could otherwise interfere with dye uptake and cause unwanted shade variations.

🧪

Industrial Chemical Processing

Used as a chelating agent in various industrial chemical processes where metal ion sequestration is required to prevent unwanted catalytic reactions or precipitation.

🛠️

Metal Surface Treatment

Used in certain metal cleaning and surface preparation formulations, helping remove metal oxide deposits and prepare surfaces for subsequent coating or treatment processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between EDTA Disodium and EDTA Tetrasodium?
EDTA Disodium has only two of its four carboxylic acid groups neutralised with sodium, giving it a more acidic pH (4-6) in solution and lower water solubility compared to EDTA Tetrasodium, which has all four groups neutralised and is more alkaline (pH 10-12) and more water soluble. The specific salt form chosen depends on the pH requirements and solubility needs of the target formulation.
Why is EDTA used as a preservative booster in cosmetics?
EDTA chelates trace metal ions in the formulation that could otherwise be utilised by microorganisms for growth, or that could catalyse oxidative degradation of the product. By sequestering these metals, EDTA enhances the effectiveness of the primary preservative system and helps maintain product stability and shelf life.
Is EDTA Disodium biodegradable?
EDTA and its salts have relatively limited biodegradability compared to many other chelating agents, which has led to increased interest in alternative chelators for certain environmentally sensitive applications. However, EDTA remains widely used due to its strong chelating efficiency and well-established safety and regulatory history across food, cosmetic, and industrial applications.
