Caustic Potash

Industrial Grade Potassium Hydroxide — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Caustic Potash?

Caustic Potash, chemically known as Potassium Hydroxide (KOH), is a strongly alkaline inorganic compound that occurs as white, highly hygroscopic flakes, pellets, or solid lumps. It is one of the strongest commercially available bases, readily dissolving in water with significant heat generation to form a highly alkaline solution. While chemically similar to Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide), Caustic Potash offers distinct advantages in certain applications due to potassium's specific chemical properties.

Polychem Industries supplies Industrial Grade Caustic Potash to soap and detergent manufacturers, fertiliser producers, battery companies, and chemical synthesis operations across India and internationally. Its particular value in producing soft, liquid potassium soaps and its role as a stronger base in certain chemical processes make it an essential alkali for specific industrial applications where Caustic Soda is not the optimal choice.

Corrosive Material Notice

Caustic Potash is a highly corrosive, strongly alkaline material that can cause severe burns to skin and eyes on contact, and its dissolution in water is strongly exothermic. Handle only with appropriate PPE including chemical-resistant gloves, face shield, and protective clothing. Never add water to the solid material directly — always add the solid slowly to water with continuous stirring to manage heat generation safely.

Applications & Uses

🧴

Liquid Soap Manufacturing

One of the most important applications. Potassium soaps produced using Caustic Potash (rather than Caustic Soda used for solid soaps) remain liquid or soft at room temperature, making Caustic Potash essential for liquid hand soap, shaving cream, and soft soap manufacturing.

🌾

Potassium Fertilisers

Used as a raw material in the production of certain potassium-based fertilisers and agricultural chemicals, providing a concentrated, reactive source of potassium for further chemical processing into fertiliser products.

🔋

Alkaline Batteries

Used as the electrolyte in alkaline batteries, including certain rechargeable battery types, providing the ionic conductivity needed to support the electrochemical reactions in these widely used battery technologies.

🧪

Chemical Synthesis & pH Adjustment

Used as a strong base in various chemical synthesis processes, including the production of potassium salts of organic acids, and as a pH adjusting agent in industrial processes requiring strong alkalinity.

🧹

Industrial Cleaning Agents

Used in heavy-duty industrial cleaning and degreasing formulations, particularly where its strong alkalinity is needed to break down stubborn organic soils, fats, and oils on industrial equipment.

🏭

Biodiesel Production

Used as a catalyst in the transesterification process for biodiesel production from vegetable oils and fats, helping convert triglycerides into biodiesel and glycerine by-product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Caustic Potash and Caustic Soda?
Caustic Potash (Potassium Hydroxide, KOH) and Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide, NaOH) are both strong alkalis with similar general chemical behaviour, but Caustic Potash is generally more expensive and produces potassium salts rather than sodium salts in chemical reactions. The most notable practical difference is in soap making: potassium soaps remain soft or liquid at room temperature, while sodium soaps are typically solid, which is why Caustic Potash is specifically required for liquid soap and shaving cream production.
Why must Caustic Potash always be added to water, never water added to it?
Dissolving Caustic Potash in water is a highly exothermic reaction, generating significant heat very quickly. If water is added to a large quantity of solid Caustic Potash, the rapid, localised heat generation can cause dangerous spattering or even boiling of the solution. The safe practice is always to add the solid slowly to a larger volume of water with continuous stirring, allowing the heat to dissipate more gradually and safely.
Why is Caustic Potash hygroscopic and how should it be stored?
Caustic Potash readily absorbs both moisture and carbon dioxide from the surrounding air, which can cause it to become sticky, clump, or gradually convert to potassium carbonate if left exposed. It should always be stored in tightly sealed, moisture-proof containers in a cool, dry location, with containers resealed promptly after each use to maintain product quality.
Do you export Caustic Potash outside India?
Yes. We export to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Africa with full export documentation, including all required hazardous material shipping documentation given its corrosive classification. Contact us for export pricing and lead times.
