Di Ethanol Amine

Industrial Grade · Technical Grade — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Di Ethanol Amine?

Di Ethanol Amine (DEA), also written as Diethanolamine, is a colourless to pale yellow viscous liquid with the chemical formula HN(CH₂CH₂OH)₂. It is a secondary amine that simultaneously functions as an amine and a diol, giving it unique properties as a surfactant, pH adjuster, corrosion inhibitor, and chemical intermediate across multiple industries.

Polychem Industries supplies Di Ethanol Amine in industrial and technical grades to detergent manufacturers, cosmetic formulators, gas treatment facilities, and industrial chemical users across India and internationally. DEA is part of the ethanolamine family that includes Mono Ethanol Amine (MEA), Di Ethanol Amine (DEA), and Tri Ethanol Amine (TEA) — all available from Polychem Industries.

Applications & Uses

🧴

Detergents & Surfactants

Reacts with fatty acids to form diethanolamides — widely used non-ionic surfactants and foam boosters in shampoos, liquid soaps, and cleaning products. DEA-based amides improve foam quality and viscosity in detergent formulations.

Gas Treatment (Acid Gas Removal)

One of the most important applications — DEA solutions are used in natural gas processing to selectively absorb and remove hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) from natural gas streams in the oil and gas industry.

💆

Cosmetics & Personal Care

Used as a pH adjuster and emulsifier in cosmetic formulations. Reacts with fatty acids to form cocamide DEA and similar products widely used in shampoos and personal care products as foam boosters and thickeners.

⚙️

Metalworking Fluids

Used as a corrosion inhibitor and pH buffer in metalworking and cutting fluids, protecting both ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces from oxidation during machining operations.

🌾

Agricultural Herbicides

Used as an emulsifier and pH adjuster in herbicide formulations. DEA salts of certain herbicide acids improve the stability and efficacy of the agricultural formulation.

🎨

Paints & Coatings

Used as a dispersant and pH adjuster in water-based paint and coating formulations. Helps stabilise pigment dispersions and improve the storage stability of water-based paints.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between MEA, DEA, and TEA?
All three are ethanolamines produced from the reaction of ethylene oxide with ammonia. MEA (Mono Ethanol Amine) is the simplest with one hydroxyl group. DEA (Di Ethanol Amine) has two hydroxyl groups and is a secondary amine. TEA (Tri Ethanol Amine) has three hydroxyl groups and is a tertiary amine. Each has different reactivity, pH, and application characteristics — MEA is more reactive and used heavily in gas treatment; DEA is preferred for surfactant production and gas sweetening; TEA is widely used as a pH adjuster in cosmetics and as a cement grinding aid.
What is Cocamide DEA and how is it made?
Cocamide DEA is produced by the reaction of coconut oil fatty acids with Di Ethanol Amine. The resulting diethanolamide is a widely used non-ionic surfactant and foam booster in shampoos, liquid soaps, and personal care products. It improves foam quality, increases viscosity, and adds a conditioning effect to hair care products.
Does DEA solidify in cold weather?
Yes — DEA has a melting point of approximately 28°C and may partially solidify in cooler storage conditions. If solidification occurs, gentle warming will restore it to a liquid state without affecting quality. It is recommended to store DEA in a temperature-controlled environment above its melting point.
