Mono Ethanol Amine

Industrial Grade — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Mono Ethanol Amine?

Mono Ethanol Amine (MEA), also known as Monoethanolamine or 2-Aminoethanol, is a colourless, viscous liquid with a mild ammonia-like odour and the chemical formula H2NCH2CH2OH. It is the simplest of the three ethanolamines (MEA, DEA, TEA) and is simultaneously a primary amine and an alcohol, making it highly reactive and versatile as an industrial chemical intermediate.

Polychem Industries supplies Mono Ethanol Amine to gas treatment facilities, detergent manufacturers, agricultural chemical companies, and industrial chemical users across India and internationally. MEA's high reactivity with acidic gases makes it particularly valuable in natural gas purification, while its strong alkalinity finds use in detergents, personal care, and chemical synthesis.

Applications & Uses

Gas Treatment (CO2 & H2S Removal)

The most significant industrial application. MEA solutions are used globally in natural gas processing, flue gas treatment, and CO2 capture systems to selectively absorb and remove CO2 and H2S from gas streams, producing purified gas suitable for pipeline or industrial use.

🧴

Detergents & Cleaning Products

Used as a pH adjuster and co-builder in liquid detergents and industrial cleaners. Reacts with fatty acids to form monoethanolamides used as foam boosters and thickeners in personal care products.

🌾

Agrochemicals

Used as an emulsifier and amine salt former in herbicide and pesticide formulations. MEA salts of herbicide acids improve solubility and efficacy of the active ingredient.

🧪

Chemical Synthesis

Used as a building block in the synthesis of chelating agents, pharmaceuticals, surfactants, and specialty chemicals. Its bifunctional nature (amine plus alcohol) makes it highly versatile as a chemical intermediate.

🎨

Paints & Coatings

Used as a pH adjuster and co-binder in water-based paints. Also used in the formulation of corrosion-inhibiting primers and protective coatings for metal surfaces.

🏭

Textile Processing

Used in textile scouring and dyeing as a pH regulator and wetting agent. Helps remove sizing agents from greige fabrics and prepares fibres for dyeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does MEA work in gas treatment?
MEA works by chemically reacting with acidic gases — primarily CO2 and H2S — in an absorber column. The MEA solution absorbs these gases at lower temperatures, forming soluble amine salts. The rich solution is then heated in a stripper column, releasing the acid gases and regenerating the MEA solution for reuse. MEA is preferred for its high reactivity, low molecular weight, and low cost, though it has higher energy requirements for regeneration than DEA.
What is the difference between MEA and DEA in gas treatment?
MEA (primary amine) is more reactive than DEA (secondary amine) with CO2 and H2S, allowing higher loading of acid gas per unit of amine. However, MEA has higher regeneration energy requirements and is more prone to degradation at high temperatures. DEA operates at higher concentrations, absorbs both H2S and CO2 effectively, and has lower regeneration energy but slower reaction kinetics. The choice depends on the specific gas composition and process requirements.
Is MEA corrosive?
MEA is a strongly alkaline liquid (pH 11.5–12.5 in solution) and can cause skin and eye irritation and burns on concentrated contact. Appropriate PPE including gloves, goggles, and chemical-resistant clothing should be worn when handling. Full MSDS documentation is available on request from Polychem Industries.
Do you export MEA outside India?
Yes. We export to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Africa with full export documentation. Contact us for export pricing and lead times.
